Do I need a new screen?

If you’ve physically damaged or cracked the LCD panel, then it will need to be replaced. Otherwise not all screen faults require replacing the LCD panel. Use the guide below to identify the likely cause behind your laptops screen issue:

Dim or Hard to read screen

The LCD screen is dim and hard to read, almost like the light has been turned off.

First check to make sure the brightness hasn’t been turned down (you can adjust it through a keyboard combination – check your laptop manual). If this doesn’t fix it, it’s likely the inverter or backlight.

In most cases the inverter is at fault, as it controls the power flow to the backlight. It is an inexpensive part to replace and doesn’t require replacing the panel.

Black Screen

The LCD screen is completely black and does not change colour when you turn the laptop on.

First check your laptop is booting by connecting an external monitor to the blue VGA port. If you see a picture, the fault is with the laptops LCD.

This fault is usually caused by a failed inverter or LCD panel, and occasionally by the laptop motherboard.

Lines on Screen

Vertical lines (sometimes of different colours) appear on the screen.

Check the source of the fault by connecting an external monitor to your laptop. If the lines appear on the external monitor, the laptop motherboard is at fault.

If the external image is fine, the LCD panel will require replacement.

Flickering Screen

The LCD screen image flickers, or the brightness changes in intensity.

Again, check the source of the fault by connecting an external monitor to your laptop. Generally flickering will not be caused by the motherboard but it always pays to check in case it’s simply a matter of a driver update.

Otherwise the inverter is usually the cause, with the panel occasionally being to blame.
